This work explores notions of excess, embellishment and drama, drawing on the political and visual forms found in Baroque art. The paintings result from a combination of chance, intuition and mashed memory and a deep sense of, and conversation with, the art of the past. Through vibrant colour, and intricate and expressive mark-making and erasure, it combines the courtly textiles and adornments of the Baroque with Abstract Expressionist forms in a deliberately over-the-top, maximalist way, executed with a feminist need to burst the bubble of self importance, aggrandisement and display of wealth in many paintings of the art canon. It is a firmly Australian, Irish convict stock, and feminist stance.
The work evidences time, memory and a life lived, in works dancing in a dialogue between the past and the present, pointing to what lies ahead for the artist.
